Travel Tips
Make sure your passport will be valid for a reasonably long time - many countries require that it have at least six months validity left. If you have never acquired a passport, try to get all your supporting documents together and apply at least six months in advance, so you will have plenty of time to take care of any glitches that may arise.
Medications should be in the original container from the pharmacy, and should be packed into your carry-on bag. Bring copies of your prescriptions (including your eyeglass Rx) in case of emergency. If you carry a syringe (for diabetes or allergies), be sure to get an official letter from your doctor to minimize any problems in customs. Check with your health insurer to see if you are covered in case of emergency while away from home.
Be sure to label your suitcases inside as well as outside, in case luggage tags get torn off. It's a good idea to tape your business card or name and address on the inside of your camera and camera case. Do the same if you carry a laptop computer.
TSA approved locks on your suitcases are good if you are traveling domestically. On international flights, locks are subject to being cut off, but carry some to lock your suitcases in your hotel room.
Bring lots of film and extra batteries with you. Film can be very expensive abroad.
When transferring liquid soap, shampoo, etc. into the small bottles now required (no more than 3 oz. capacity) only fill them ¾ full, and squeeze the excess air out to help prevent leakage. Bottles may be enclosed in a clear quart-size zip-top bag.
Airline weight and size limits on each bag are currently no more than 50 pounds, and height by width by depth measurements can total no more than 62". Most 26" unexpanded suitcases will fit the size requirements, but if you use that size you need to be careful of the weight. Airlines will charge you extra for oversize and overweight bags.
